While the current drawings were created by 385af, c8400 would like to encourage anyone else to do the same. Draw while listening to (classical) music. //// Four generations This publication arose from a connection spanning four generations of one family - a connection based on classical music. At the core of it lies a vinyl record collection that was passed from the grandparents and parents to c8400 who in turn passed it on to its son 385af. 1 The vinyl record collection originated from the generation of c8400´s grandparents (r.i.p.). One pair of c8400's grandparents played piano and violin and their favorite composers were Beethoven and Dvorak. The other pair of c8400's grandparents did not care much for music and if anything, they would probably go for traditional folk songs, brass marching bands or Strauss family compositions. Further additions came from family friends of similar age, e.g. friends of my grandparents (here I would like to specially acknowledge the Hartmann family and thank them for their contribution). The time span of the record production thus lies in the second half (mostly last quarter) of the 20th century. 2 c8400's parents were a natural connection between the generations, but based on c8400 observation, neither were much interested in music. A notable contribution came from c8400's mother, who salvaged a bunch of classical records when they were being thrown away from library stocks in the 1990s. 3 c8400 was in fact not much interested in classical music when growing up. The grandparent's piano education failed. Instead, his interest was in electronic music. It amassed a small electronic music collection and picked up DJing. Classical music came only slowly into focus when grandparents passed away and the records needed a new owner. c8400 adjusted the collection into its current form based on his taste and preference - only instrumental works were kept and any kind of singing hat to go (opera, folk, etc.). The collection took a shape that c8400 could identify with. 4 Once c8400's son 385af was born, the collection got a new life. As soon as it was able to, 385af took great interest in the physical presence of the record collection. Pulling out records one by one became one of his favorite activities. At the same time, c8400 subscribed to the idea, that classical music is good for babies. As 385af already started interacting with the collection by itself, there was only a small step to make: Put the records it pulled out on the turntable, drop the needle, listen and... find a way to document this activity, which was done through photographing the covers and providing paper and crayons for 385af to draw while music was playing. DRAWING Drawing was used as a method based on c8400's own experience. It believes that drawing and its direct feedback loop between the eye, the hand and the brain enables a heightened focus and receptivity not only to visual, but also to audible stimuli. It is a way of engaging with the surrounding world and of experiencing technology (a pencil/crayon) in its purest form. It is a way of thinking the world through one´s eyes, hands and ears. CULTURE This concludes the time progression it took to arrive at this publication. In a larger context, this progression is of course only a very small element within a much bigger whole, a whole which spans millions of people listening, interpreting, playing, collecting, discussing and passing on music knowledge for hundreds and thousands of years. In this global view, a simple act as listening to a record together with your close ones appears insignificant.
